The Doctor apparently had the ol’ security turned up a mite high, which severely impinged on your comments! (Like you pretty much couldn’t do any commenting!) Sigh. Live and learn… hopefully it is now not too lax. I have removed Spam Karma, and I am trying Akismet to control spamming. We’ll see what happens! Be kind to the ol’ Doc! Sigh.
The first web site editor I used was Frontpage. (Don’t throw rocks at me!) I have since used Dreamweaver, and many other WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editors… and yes, I am also a REAL man, I use a plain text editor to code in raw HTML. But come on… you secretly sometimes DO use a WYSIWYG editor, don’t you?!? (I thought so!) Anyway, I have tried a lot of HTML WYSIWYG editors… and I was SUPER EXCITED when Nvu was released! Finally, an editor that could give the Evil Empire a run for it’s money, and it was Open Source as well! YAY!
But. You knew there would be one, huh? Nvu has a nasty habit of adding in blank lines to its code! ARRRRRRRGGGGHHH! So, recently (maybe not news to you, but it was to me) I found KompoZer! KompoZer, it seems is the UN-official update to Nvu… and… ta-da! And, it fixes the blank line issue! HOORAY!
This is a very unusual Geek Software of the Week, because it is not freeware, but rather is a purchased product. The reason? Well, the Microsoft Daylight Savings Time debacle has been a big deal for folks that are dealing with old NT boxes and Windows 2000 boxes. Instead of paying Microsoft $4000.00, why not buy IntelliAdmin for $199.00? It also does a lot more than fix the DST issue, and it allows you to do it from one system and “push it out” to your whole network! Very nice!
“IntelliAdmin Network Administrator will allow you to:
-Validate installation of 2007 Daylight Saving Patch. It can detect ours, and Microsoft’s patch
-Push out and apply 2007 Daylight Saving patch to Windows NT, 2000, XP and 2003 machines

My understanding is that you can try it for free, but I strongly encourage you to buy it if you decide to use it… let’s support this guy’s efforts to help admins!
That is, if you are Microsoft and practically own the world anyway… so, you have a product that is lame, you can’t get folks to use it… so you PAY them to use it… oh yeah… that makes sense!
Microsoft to Pay Business for Using Live Search
“Microsoft is now offering to pay businesses through service or training credits if they get their employees to use its Live Search product at work. The amount of the payment would be based on the number of search queries served. While many may view this as a sign of desperation from a company whose search share badly lags behind that of competitors Google and Yahoo, Microsoft is attempting to spin it in a different way. Currently Google serves about half of all search queries, followed by Yahoo that serves about 24 percent. Microsoft has around an 8 percent search share, Neilsen/NetRatings reports. The company claims that feedback gained from the program would be used to improve Live Search for enterprise use. However, at the same time the program could raise the company’s search share, thus allowing the company to sell more advertising and highlight its other related products.”
Which is what it is all about… you get enough “eyes” viewing your content, and you sell more products. So, maybe they ARE crazy… like a fox!

A totally clueless person posts on the ZDnet forum about how he doesn’t believe that Linux will run without Windows! My son, Ben, the GameMaster, talks about his views on gaming and other things… almost a podcast within a podcast!

Well, yeah… that’s kinda the point… but in case you think I am misunderstanding his point, check this:

Yep… he is that clueness… and rather indignantly righteous about it as well. I bring this out not to “diss” this guy, I don’t know him, don’t know his name… but, it does show just what we have yet to do in getting across the benefits of Open Source, and specifically Linux. Yes, you can boot and run a computer ENTIRELY Microsoft free… and do it better, faster, safer, and totally FREE! We HAVE to educate the masses… but… really, this is amazing!
From the maker’s of one of my favorite utilities, CCleaner, we now have Recuva!
“Recuva (pronounced ‘recover’) is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!”
It is still in Beta, but as with CCleaner, it is FREEWARE! Enjoy!
We use WebEx at work. It is pretty nice. But, Cisco must LOVE them! They are paying $2.9 BILLION for them… whoa!

“‘As collaboration in the workplace becomes increasingly important, companies are looking for rich communications tools to help them work more effectively,’ Cisco Chief Development Officer Charles Giancarlo said in a statement.”
Yep… you can actually by a Commodore PC again. Would you want to? Well, here’s the deal:

OK… I can dig that. But maybe the best part… for ol’ timers that used to love their Commodore’s is that all of the systems come preloaded with a Commodore64 emulator and 50 “classic” games. Dewd! Gotta love that! (If you are a geezer, anyway!)
I have been thinking about the recent flap over Microsoft’s response (or lack thereof) to the Daylight Savings Time issue. This has been a “known problem” for two years, and I understand that they had to address it to customers in the window from November of last year (after the last time change) and now… but, there seemed to be no really clear plan… no helpful notices along the way, and no regard at all to businesses that were still running what Microsoft regards as “legacy” versions of software. Notably, Microsoft Exchange 5.5. If you have Exchange 5.5, there IS a fix for internal calendar issues with the time change, BUT they were not provided to customers unless the customers paid a special $4000.00 fee! In this situation, it could be viewed by customers of Microsoft as A) paying a penalty for their not upgrading as Microsoft wanted them to, or B) extortion! Where is the “customer care?” Where is the desire to “go the extra mile” for customer relations?
Is Microsoft SO arrogant, SO sure of its market share, that they don’t really care about customer needs? Having dealt with them as a system administrator for many years, sadly, the answer appears to be…. yes. They know that they have you by “the short hairs.” You will do as they say, you will take what they give you, you will pay what they require… or, what?
Well, some are going to look elsewhere, given enough grief. I have only HALF jokingly said to folks where I work, “Well, we could always go to Sendmail!” Or Postfix, or Zimbra, or, or, or… Microsoft may not believe it, but there ARE alternatives. And they may find out soon, just how many there really are out there. The hard way!
