How Linus Announced Linux!

This post on the “Methodshop” site, has an image of the Usenet posting that Linus Torvalds did back in 1991. It is quite amazing, because I read this from that newsgroup as it was posted. I remember that! Pretty wild!

How Linux Was Announced to the World in 1991 [pic]

“Ever used the Linux kernel or OS before? Even if you don’t currently have Linux installed on your home computer, chances are, something that you use on a daily basis, from the server that hosts your website to your television DVR, is powered by Linux. The open-source Linux operating system started a revolution in computing and is adored by software enthusiasts, power users, hackers and programmers everywhere.

Linux was created as a hobby by a Finnish computer science student named Linus Benedict Torvalds. But did you ever wonder how Linux was ‘announced?’ Linus first told the world about his ‘hobby OS’ on a Google Groups posting on Aug 26 1991 at 2:12 am.”

Look where we are now!

A new version of the Release Candidate is available for Windows Thin PC. Windows Thin PC is designed for Thin Client use in VDI environments.

“The release candidate (RC) of Windows Thin PC is now available at the company’s Connect testing site. The RC build is 7601.17514 (win7sp1_rtm_embedded_pos.110420-1302). Microsoft also revealed on Monday that it plans to RTM Windows Thin PC within this quarter (Q2 CY2011). ‘We have seen tremendous interest in the product with thousands of downloads of the software,’ said Microsoft’s Karri Alexion-Tiernan. ‘So, we would like to take this opportunity to recognize our enthusiastic community of well over 12,000 customers and partners who have signed up for the Technology Preview program.’

Microsoft is not planning to charge customers for Windows Thin PC. Instead, the company will offer it as part of Microsoft’s Software Assurance offerings for customers. Microsoft’s Software Assurance Licensing allows businesses large and small to spread licence costs over multiple years and receive ‘free’ upgrades to newer versions during the licence period.”
