Coffee is High in Antioxidants

Coffee is good for you! Coffee is bad for you! Experts can’t seem to make up their mind on this one. But today, it is in the “good for you” category! Turns out that coffee has lot’s of antioxidants.

Think of a nail. You put it out in the weather and it rusts. It is “oxidizing.” Left long enough it would “oxidize” away to nothing. A similar thing happens at the cellular level in the body. Oxidants “eat away” at cells. Therefore, “anti-oxidants” keep your cells from being “eaten away.” (OK, a VERY simple analogy.)

Coffee as an antioxidant

So, go have a cup a’ joe and know that you are being healthy! (At least this week!)

Geek Software of the Week: Ewido Security Suite!

Anti-Virus and Spyware are no longer the ONLY things that we have to fight on the Internet! Now there are hijacking programs, Trojans, Worms, dialing programs that “take over your system, and keylogging programs that record your keystrokes and allow people to steal your personal info. Here’s another tool in your arsenal to keep your system safe! It will detect these programs and does not interfere with the operation of your current antivirus or Spyware removal program! And, it is FREE!

Ewido Security Suite

Get it, scan your system, and don’t be surprised that it may find things that your current software didn’t find!

A Hard Core Conservative Wants “Green” Fuel!

I saw a report on TV this weekend on a local (Charlotte area) gas company that was bringing ethanol to the Carolinas. It is usable by cars that can use “flex” fuels. It is 85% ethanol and 15% regular gas. Let’s see… it burns better, your car gets better gas mileage, it is made from corn, which we have in surplus, is a renewable resource, and is grown in this country. The farmers in America get the profit, not the Arabs. AND, it is $2.09 a gallon, and gas is (as I write this) about $2.55 per gallon. Is it me, or is this just a no-brainer? Get it here in the Piedmont, somebody, and I will drive out of my way to buy it! And this from a guy that doesn’t even believe in global warming! Rock on.

Geek Software of the Week: AutoIt

Have you ever needed to automate something in the Windows GUI? (Graphical User Environment) You need to be able to simulate a “click this, enter that, run this” when you aren’t even there at your PC and you want it to run in “the background?” Well, here’s the answer! AutoIt is a “BASIC-like” point and click environment that allows you to automate Windows operations!

AutoIt Scripting Language

Very cool, very flexible… you will like it!

Publish Your Own Book On-Line!

Ever wanted to publish your own book? I know I have. Now you can! Check this out!

Lulu.com

And here is how it works:

Lulu.com Flash Presentation “How To”

The technology to do this is so very cool, the geek in me loves it! Each book is individually printed and bound (paperback) only as you order it… it is then printed, bound and shipped AFTER the book is ordered on-line! So, you only want 20 copies? No problem… you want no copies, but want to offer it for sale on-line? Again, no problem! Very cool!

Googly Stuff

As a webmaster and web designer, I like getting ranked high on Google Searches… in fact, such a listing is the “Holy Grail” for getting traffic to your site! Some searches are easy to get if you have unusual or different content… for instance, if you have a site like mine (that you are looking at) and were to go to Google and type in: “Computer Curmudgeon” then I come up number one. Fair enough… and even if you have a common name (like: “Bill Bailey”) and you add in something to distinquish it, like: “Dr. Bill Bailey”, then once again… I am number one for that search on Google. But, if you get real “generic” and start typing in a common, simple topic that is non-specific, it gets harder to be number one. For instance, with the whole low carb diet craze, what if you wanted to find a “low carb store” and searched Google. That would be harder to get to rank high, right? Well, of course, IF you were to type in “low carb store” in Google… you would find that a site I designed and host is ranked number one! (Brag, brag!) Why? Because I study web promotion and know how to do it, dewd! Well here’ s an interesting tidbit:

Google and H1 code

Who knew! Actually, it kinda makes sense, if the content of your headline in your article has to do with a given subject, then your site probably has to do with that subject as well. But, H1 headlines are BIG… unless you tone them down with an appropriate CSS definition. Something to think about the next time you go to code an HTML page. And, I KNOW that will be real soon now!

Is Google Earth a Security Risk?

I have to admit, the Google Earth program is WAY cool! I was able to zoom right in on the location of the place I worked back when I lived in Dallas, TX. (I am originally from Thomasville, NC, and then moved to Denton, NC… but I moved to Dallas for about two and half years… then back to the Greensboro area, where I happily reside now… but I digress!) I was amazed at how accurately it gave exact coordinates for the location. And it occurred to me, “What if I was a terrorist, and wanted to drop a bomb?” Hummmm… well, that thought has occurred to others as well.

Is Google Earth a Security Risk

So, what do you think? Google Earth has way cool “Geek Factor”… but is it a security risk as well?
